The attention on Spain forced Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero into damage-control mode, as he sought to quell worries that Spain might be another Greece in the making. He called such talk "complete madness."
"We have strong solvency," Zapatero said yesterday during a speech in front of the European Parliament. "We can’t spend the whole day speculating [about Spain’s fiscal health]."
Yet Spain is grappling with a 20 percent unemployment rate, and its debt levels account for 53 percent of the country’s GDP.
Portugal is in an even more precarious situation: its debt levels are at 77 percent of GDP. By comparison, Greece’s debt level is at 115 percent and Uncle Sam was at 53 percent last year and is projected to rise to 71 percent over the next two years, according to the International Monetary Fund.
Both Spain and Portugal recently saw their sovereign debt ratings downgraded by Standard & Poor’s.
