Šuker: problemi s isplatom 5,5 milijardi kuna za plaće i mirovine
18/03/2009

US Federal Reserve plans $1.15 trillion injection
In a development which mirrors recent actions by the Bank of England, America’s central bank will buy $300bn of US government securities in an attempt to pump more funds into the economy by monetising its own debt.
The Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC), chaired by Ben Bernanke, also said that it plans to buy up to $750bn of additional agency mortgage-backed securities, on top of $500bn already committed, and double the agency debt it plans to buy this year from $100bn to $200bn.
James Caron, Morgan Stanley’s head of global rates research, said the decision was "a pretty dramatic move," while State Street’s Robert Blake noted that it "reverses course from what Bernanke had suggested in January," adding the Treasury purchases are likely to be a one-off.
The decision to buy securities provided an immediate fillip to equities, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reversing a 138 point decline to trade 125.53 points higher at 7,519.23.
It also pushed the dollar significantly lower, with the euro hitting a two-month peak above $1.3427 at one stage, and sterling rebounding 1.2pc to $1.4224.
The decision, approved by all ten voting members present at the FOMC’s meeting, came alongside a commitment to keep interest rates in the 0-0.25pc range, reiterating the view that rates will stay low for an extended period.
The FOMC also said that the economy had continued to contract since its last meeting in January with "job losses, declining equity and housing wealth, and tight credit conditions" all weighing on consumer sentiment and spending.
The FOMC however said that "although the near-term economic outlook is weak, the committee anticipates that policy actions to stabilise financial markets and institutions, together with fiscal and monetary stimulus, will contribute to a gradual resumption of sustainable economic growth."
