Europe
Producers have announced the closure of several plants
over the past 7-10 days on account of the slowdown in
orders for NPKs.

Lithuania – Yara has announced the permanent closure of
its 250,000 tonnes/year NPK plant at Kedainiai
Italy – Yara has announced the temporary closure of its
300,000 tonnes/year NPK plant at Ravenna from mid
December. The timing of the restart would depend on
market developments.

Norway – an explosion and fire at Yara’s Porsgrunn
complex on 3 December damaged the smaller of its two
NPK units at the site. Yara has a total capacity to make 1.8m
tonnes/year of NPKs at Porsgrunn. The smaller unit is
understood to have a capacity of about 600,000 tonnes/year.
An investigation is taking place into the cause of the
explosion and to ascertain the extent of the damage.

France- Timac has announced it will cut production to 40%
at its two Saint-Malo production sites until January 2009.
Timac has asked its 200 Saint-Malo employees to take paid
leave as the sites stop production between 19 December
2008 and 5 January 2009.

Belgium – the Prayon Group will temporarily stop
production at its Engis and Puurs sites in Belgium for two
weeks from 29 December. Prayon will not import any
phosphate rock in January as a result. At Engis and Puurs,
Prayon produces purified phosphoric acid for use in
technical and food applications, sodium tripolyphosphate,
as well as MAP, DAP, SSP and TSP and PK fertilizers.

Turkey – Toros will suspend fertilizer production
indefinitely at its Ceyhan and Samsun plants. Ceyhan has a
capacity to produce up to 660,000 tonnes/year of
NPKs/DAP. Samsun can produce around 400,000
tonnes/year of DAP/NPKS and TSP. Production will
continue at the company’s Mersin factory.

Chinese producer, Shanghai Petrochemical, plans to shut
down its 130,000 tonne/year acrylonitrile plant for one
month in December.

In Malaysia, Petronas expects to restart plant operations at
Kerteh in mid December. There are currently no plans to
export in December and the first shipment is expected in
January.

In Indonesia, the KPA plant is understood to be in the
process of restarting following its maintenance shutdown.
Mitsui expects to have ammonia available for shipment
from 10-11 December, but says it will depend on how the
restart progresses and that no shipment is fixed from
Indonesia yet.

In Australia, Burrup is expected to start ammonia
production in mid December, after six months of closure.
CSBP will receive its next contract cargo from Yara in
mid/late February. It last received a 25,500 tonne Yuzhny
cargo from Yara on the Viking River at Kwinana in late
