Turning Croatia’s Ports into Regional Gateways
Rijeka, vying for a dominant position as Southern Europe’s gateway
Today, Rijeka is trying to improve its position as a competitive gateway to Europe at a time when there are no dominant port-regions in southern Europe. Although Rijeka is located in a relatively affluent region in Croatia, the World Bank is eager to help Rijeka seize the opportunity to place itself on the European map. “You’re only 25 kilometers away from the EU,” says Ollivier. “Rijeka is as close as you can be to Europe without being in the EU at this stage.”
Port of Ploce 3The Rijeka Gateway project aims to create a dominant traffic route in Croatia, connecting seaways with European road and railway corridors. The port of Rijeka already generates around 40% of its cargo traffic from trade with Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
“Once Croatia does become part of the EU, Rijeka should see a big increase in tourism and cargo traffic,” predicts Ollivier. “It’s therefore crucial that Rijeka redefine its port-city interface.”
At present Rijeka is mainly an industrial port where city inhabitants and tourists are prevented from really enjoying the sea. The Rijeka Gateway project tries to restore a balance between port services and the attractiveness of the city to maximize real estate and tourism opportunities.
Port of Ploce 3A loan of $156.6 million is financing major improvements such as the reconstruction of the harbor’s infrastructure and the replacement of equipment used for handling heavy cargo.
The loan proceed will also go towards improving the Rijeka waterfront with the construction of a new passenger terminal (for cruise ships carrying up to 500 passengers), and by enabling the selection of private developers to create a marina in the old harbor and develop a new hotel, residential and commercial area along the sea. Beyond the port-city’s gates, the project will substantially improve the regional road network in particular the Eastern access Road.
Attracting businesses and jobs to the region
By 2011, Rijeka could look more like Barcelona or Baltimore thanks to a mixture of public and private investments. “The Bank is playing the role of a catalyst, helping to create a package that is attractive for the private sector,” notes Ollivier.
Bojan Hlaca, Executive Director of the Rijeka Port Authority, expects significant public benefits from this project. “Our consultants estimate that about 2,000 jobs will be created in Rijeka and another 1,000 in the region,” he said at a World Bank event recently. “Most of the work will be sea-related, and some will be related to tourism. By the year 2020, Croatia’s budget should receive an average USD 18.5 million from taxes on profits realized throught business activities in Rijeka.”

Luki, očigledno kasniš sa ulazom (po tvom mišljenju). Mnogi ne misle tako zato i ulaze na ovim razinama a očekuju puno više vrlo brzo. Zato je i LKRI jedna od stabilno likvidnih dionica…….. [smiley1]
