This mechanism is called the self-serving bias. Also, people tend to blame failures on others and attribute successes to their own ability. This phenomenon is referred to as biased self-attribution (Zuckerman, 1979). The self-serving bias and biased self-attribution contribute to the dynamics of overconfidence. The asymmetry in dealing with successes and failures makes sure that people do not learn enough from their mistakes. In fact, biased self-attribution increases overconfidence.
