26-05-2007 – Adani Group orders 2 bulk carriers from South Korean firm
Adani Enterprises Ltd, the flagship company of the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, has placed orders for two new capesize bulk carriers with South Korea’s Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. for about Rs650 crore. The order will be funded partly from $250 million (Rs1,025 crore) foreign currency convertible bonds raised by the company in December 2006.“We have ordered two capesize ships at Hanjin yard and these will be delivered in the last quarter of 2010,” said an Adani Group official who did not want to be named. The ships are being acquired through Adani Shipping Pte Ltd, the Singapore-based wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, and will fly the Singapore flag. The city-state is seen by Indian shipowners as an ideal place to own and operate ships given the conducive fiscal regime prevailing there.
Capesize vessels are the largest ships capable of carrying dry-bulk commodities and typically can carry as much as 175,000 deadweight tonnes of coal, steel or iron ore.Deadweight is the displacement of the ship including the crew, passengers, cargo, fuel, water and stores, minus the weight of the ship without fuel, passengers, cargo, water, etc. on board.
These ships have to travel between oceans via the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn because they are too large to sail through either the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal.
The Adani Group trades in commodities, makes edible oil, runs the Mundra Port in Gujarat and distributes natural gas.
The ships will be used by Adani to transport coal from its mines in Indonesia to the proposed 2,000 megawatt coal-based power plant coming up at Mundra.
On the return leg, the ships will carry iorn ore to China from the company’s mines at Belekeri in north Karnataka. This will ensure business to the ships both ways, helping the firm gain control over cargo and save on ship-hire rates.
Since the company does not have expertise in operating ships, the task of managing and crewing the vessels will be outsourced to professionals in this area, the official said. The two ships will make 12 trips in a year, carrying 2.2 million tonnes of cargo.
The cost of transporting dry bulk commodities on ships have soared 48% this year on the back of rising demand for raw materials from China, the world’s top consumer of iron ore and coal. Besides, shipping congestion at Australian ports, including at Newcastle, the world’s busiest coal export port, is cutting the supply of vessels leading to higher rates.
The average daily hire rate for a capesize ship is currently $108,907, according to the London-based Baltic Exchange’s capesize Index, a measure of costs for capesize vessels. (Source: Livemint)
22-05-2007 – Far Eastern Shipping Co (Russia) orders series of supramax ships in China
Russian’s Far Eastern Shipping Co (Fesco) is jumping on the supramax-bulker bandwagon with a series of newbuildings in China.
Market players say the fast-expanding company has returned to Jinling Shipyard for four 57,000-dwt units for delivery in 2010. The bulkers, which will not be built to the enhanced performance standards for protective coatings (PSPC), are said to be costing between $36m and $37m per ship.Russia’s largest containership operator, Fesco operates a tramp fleet of 39 ships. The supramax newbuildings at Jinling will be the company’s biggest bulkers. The Clarkson database lists Fesco’s current largest bulkers as four handysizes of 33,800 dwt to 37,200 dwt.
Fesco went to China in 2004 when it contracted six 1,100-teu boxships at Jinling for about $19m each. The shipbuilder has since delivered four and is set to hand over the remaining two next year.Meanwhile, Vladivostok-based Fesco also has four 1,831-teu boxships under construction at Kouan Shipyard in China. They are slated for delivery from late 2007 through to early 2009.The company also has four 3,100-teu and three 1,700-teu containerships under construction at Poland’s Szczecin Shipyard. They are all set for delivery in 2008 and 2009.
Last month, Fesco announced it had logged gigantic earnings for 2006. Net profit jumped from just $11.25m in 2005 to $68.9m. Fesco expanded into railway services and container terminals last year through a number of large acquisitions. The company was said to have spent $275m to buy a 50% stake in terminal operator National Container Co, another $84m on 50% of the stock in railway oufit Transgarant and $8m on stock in Trans-Siberian Railway.(Source: cnshipping)
22-05-2007 – China Dalian beefs up fleet with trio of supramaxes
China Dalian International Corp has ordered three 57,000 dwt supramaxes at a total cost of $101m from an east China shipyard.
The vessels, which will be operated through Singapore subsidiary Da Sin Shipping, will more than double the size of the company’s bulker fleet by 2009.The ships will be delivered between August and December next year and increase total tonnage from 106,000 dwt to 277,000 dwt.
Company spokesman Han Xiuji declined to disclose details of the shipyard except to say it was a Sino-foreign joint venture in Jiangsu province. Insiders believe it could be Nantong KHI Cosco Ship Engineering.Mr Han said the newbuildings would be partially financed by the $39.9m generated from the sale in March of the 2003-built, 49,000 dwt bulker Mandarin Glory.Bank finance will be arranged to cover the balance of the cost of the newbuildings.China Dalian International said: “The new order can enlarge and improve the age-structure of our fleet and will allow us to grasp the opportunity in the market.”It now owns a 49,000 dwt bulker which is on time charter. It has another 57,000 dwt newbuilding on order for delivery next year. The Mandarin Glory has been renamed CK Glory by COAG & KML, which is a joint venture between state-owned China Ocean Aviation Group and Dalian transport outfit Inteh Group. DRY BULK
CHARTERING – Handy
Believe or not but the market has gone down. In the Pacific the rates dropped by usd 1500 in 7 days. Ikan Serong was fixed at usd 38,500 for a voyage Hazira/WC India to China. Nonetheless the back-haul voyages have been still offering attractive rates for the Owners – see Ocean Queen fixture concluded at usd 41,000. USG also lost its stardom glitter and Owners had to face the lower rates but still at the dazzling usd 63/64,000 levels. CMB Yangtze was employed for 5/6 months at ‘only’ usd 41,500.
CHARTERING – Panamax
Panamax market continued the decreasing tendency from end of last week. The average of the 4 t/c routes went from USD 50,706 to USD 49,141 this week. Pacific roundvoyages decreased from 50k/48k to about usd 45k, backhaul is now traded at arnd USD 41,000 in comparison with last week fixture reported done at USD 45,000. Atlantic market is still historically strong with roundvoyages fixed at USD 53/54,000, and trips to the Far East at USD 55,000 level, but with a steady/slow decreasing tendency. Short period, 4/6 mos reported fixed USD 48,000 in Pacific, and USD 54,000 in Atlantic. The long period market has been affected by the sudden drop – with less or no activity at present time.
CHARTERING – Capesize
Despite loosing some 4% on average since last week, the spot market for capers still cannot be described as anything but extremely healthy. The present correction came as no surprise, and fundamentals indicate the next change of turn may just as well be a positive one. Activity is high, with standard 174,000-tonners obtaining some usd 103,000/day for pacific- respectively around usd 107,000/day for Atlantic rounds. Much focus is on the fronthaul run, where the tonnage situation is tight and usd 141,000/day was just concluded for an average 172,000-tonner. Forward expectations remain HIGH, with several units concluded for long period the last few days – exemplified by 177,000 dwt N/B fetching usd 48,000 net to owners for 5 years tc basis delivery Aug 2008.
