Pace eases but handymax sector in good health Dry cargo

HANDYMAX activity in the Atlantic has started to slow down, with the majority of prompt ships now cleared out as charterers and owners put their feet up until the new year, writes Jamie Dale.
Freight rates in the Atlantic “exploded” last week, one analyst said, as a result of a short supply of ships available for those charterers looking to fix the remaining end of month cargoes.
With these cargoes now fixed, the remaining prompt tonnage has been cleared with the earliest available date for tonnage now January 5-10, according to brokers. “The market put the brakes on yesterday and today with signs that the market is definitely slowing down,” said a London broker. “The market has cleared out the end of December prompt ships, and for those people who have got out it seems its time to put their feet up.”
Despite the easing in pace, rates at the start of the week were still fetching very healthy levels for trips in the Atlantic. Big numbers were being seen out of the Continent for supramax ships with owners commanding around $74,000 per day for a trip via the Gulf to Japan.
Ships fixing out of the Continent for two laden legs for a Tess 52 type ship were attracting $73,000 per day for redelivery worldwide. In west Africa, rates for 55,000 dwt ships stood at $82,000-$83,000 per day for a trip to the Far East and $84,000 per day to India.
The London broker expects to see a boom in rates in the new year once activity picks up. But for now charterers, especially in South America, are keeping their cards close to their chests in terms of available cargoes, he said.
The broker added that some January cargoes to the Far East have been nominated out of west Africa for phosphorus rock from Morocco and Algeria.
The Pacific market continued to weaken this week as rates fell a further $5,000 per day according to Fearnleys.
“Round voyages rates are close to going below $50,000 daily while on the back-haul route they are already at $48,000 daily,” said Fearnleys. The Oslo brokerage added that rates remained attractive to India and China with ships fetching around $70,000 per day.
London broker ICAP Hyde said that the Pacific market was lacking direction in the east with the holiday periods approaching. “There is more period enquiry from charterers for January positions, signalling perhaps that charterers anticipate the market may see some recovery and that this maybe the ideal moment to pick up cheap period tonnage,” said ICAP Hyde.
As a result more cargoes were appearing in the market this week both from Australia, north Pacific and Indian regions.
The London brokerage added that a 47,000 dwt vessel was reported to be on subjects for short period business, open in North China/Japan range at around mid $50,000s per day. The 2001-built, 50,296 dwt Merlin was reported to be fixed for a spot trip with delivery in Shibushi, Japan, via north Pacific with redelivery in India for around $52,500 per day by PCL.
