The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, a measure of global shipping costs, extended gains for the fourth consecutive session on Tuesday, surging about 11% to touch its highest level since March 25th at 2,083 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, jumped by 21.2% to 3,239 points, as activity remains strong in the key loading regions of Australia (iron ore), Brazil (iron ore) and West Africa (bauxite). Simultaneously, the panamax index, which usually carries about 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain cargo, climbed by 3.5% to 1,949 points; and the supramax index edged up 3 points to 1,461 points.
