China hopes US will not impose tariffs after talks
China hopes US will not impose tariffs after talks
China’s Commerce Ministry said on Thursday that its trade team is in “communication” with American counterparts and that mid-level negotiators are set to meet soon. High-level talks are also on the agenda, it added.
The ministry in Beijing welcomed US “goodwill” on trade, after President Donald Trump delayed the tariffs planned for October 1 by two weeks. It also expressed hope the duties will ultimately not be imposed after the next round of talks.
Chinese companies have begun to enquire about the prices of US agricultural products, the spokesperson for the ministry noted. In August, China stopped buying US farm goods as retaliation to the newest tariffs announced by Trump several days before.
Trump: Expected that China will buy US agricultural products
United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that it was “expected” that China would buy US agricultural products.
“It is expected that China will be buying large amounts of our agricultural products!” Trump tweeted.
Trump’s remarks come after he announced earlier in the day that Washington will postpone the introduction of increased tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods to October 15. His comments also echoed those of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who said that the US expected China to buy its farm goods and that Trump was ready to keep the tariffs on Chinese products or raise them further.

Report: Trump advisers mull interim China deal to delay tariffs
The Trump administration is considering an interim trade deal with China in order to avoid tariffs on American goods, sources said on Thursday.
According to the Bloomberg report, the limited agreement would be made in exchange for commitments from Beijing on intellectual property and the buying of US agricultural products.
As President Donald Trump’s advisers reportedly mull the plan, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin stated earlier that the president is ready to keep the tariffs on Chinese products or raise them further if necessary
WH official denies US is mulling interim China deal
An unnamed senior White House official denied on Thursday reports that the administration is considering striking an interim deal with China in a bid to delay tariffs.
The official was quoted as saying that it is “absolutely not true” that the White House is mulling an interim deal, shooting down hopes of a recent resolution to the trade spat.
Beijing is, however, thinking about changing the course of the talks. Earlier reports have indicated that the country is mulling separating the issue of the trade from national security in an effort to settle the more pressing issues more quickly.
