Trade war: China’s Liu He and US’ Steven Mnuchin and Robert Lighthizer in phone talks despite Huawei row
The two sides’ head negotiators, Liu and Lighthizer, spoke on Tuesday morning along with Mnuchin, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
“Both sides have exchanged views on pushing forward the next step of the timetable and road map for consensus made during the leadership meeting,” a statement said, referring to the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump on December 1.

Trump said on Tuesday that those negotiations were already taking place by telephone.
“We’ll probably have another meeting. And maybe a meeting of the top people on both sides,” Trump said. “If it’s necessary, I’ll have another meeting with President Xi, who I like a lot and get along with very well.”
He said he would wait to increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent until it becomes apparent whether the United States and China can make a deal.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – China made its first major U.S. soybean purchases in more than six months on Wednesday, two U.S. traders said, and its first since U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping struck a trade war truce in early December.
Chinese state-owned companies bought at least 500,000 tonnes of U.S. soybeans, two U.S. traders said, in deals valued at more than $180 million.

China resumes buying American soybeans amid current ceasefire in trade war
Chinese importers have bought 1.5 million to 2 million metric tonnes of American soy over the past 24 hours, the US Soybean Export Council said, citing industry sources.
The shipments are expected to occur sometime during the first quarter, Jim Sutter, chief executive officer of the council, confirmed by phone and email. Most of the supplies will be shipped from terminals in the Pacific northwest.
China Plans More U.S. Soybean Purchases Soon
China’s state stockpiler Sinograin and its top food company Cofco will buy more U.S. soybeans as soon as Thursday, according to people with direct knowledge of the plan.
The purchases may be made as soon as tonight in Asia, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is confidential. The orders would be in addition to the 1.5 million to 2 million tons that the U.S. Soybean Export Council said China bought over the past 24 hours, a major gesture toward easing trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies.
The purchases would be further confirmation that Xi Jinping’s administration is keeping its pledge to resolve trade tensions with the U.S. after agreeing on a truce earlier this month.
