Capesize Market Hurt by Over Reliance on Chinese Economy
“Given the current state of play in the US-China trade dispute, things look very murky in terms of the fundamental drivers of the Capsize market for the coming months. Despite the recent expressed optimism from presidents of both the United States and China, we still seem to be far from any real resolution. So as we have it this latest hit in the Capesize market may well have put the final nail in the coffin of what most were expecting to see in terms of freight rate performance in the final quarter. We seem to be world apart when given what the paper market was suggesting and seem to be even falling short against the market performance noted back in 2017. There is still room for some sort of recovery to take shape and this may well be driven from any increased demand for thermal coal later in the quarter (this of course is highly dependent on winter weather conditions). However, given what we are seeing right now it looks as though the average for the final three months of the year will fall to a level of well below US$ 20,000pd”, Allied’s analyst concluded.

Trump: We may not need more tariffs on China
United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that Washington “may not need” to impose any additional tariffs on Chinese imports if Beijing offers trade concessions to the US. Trump stated that he hopes the US will reach a trade deal with Beijing, but he reaffirmed that trade between the two countries has to be reciprocal. The president said China is willing to make a deal, but it is “not yet acceptable.”
“China sent a list of what they’re willing to, but it’s not acceptable to me yet,” Trump said. “China was taking advantage of the US for many many years,” he pointed out, adding that Washington imposed $250 billion worth of tariffs already, and another $267 billion “ready to be put in place if we want to.” The president added that the US is going to make China “fair, because right now it is not fair.”
The two countries started to step up efforts to reach an agreement ahead of the G20 summit in Argentina later this month, as Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the phone earlier. The two officials are set to meet on the sidelines of the summit in Buenos Aires, to discuss trade. White House trade adviser Larry Kudlow confirmed that trade relations will be in focus of the two presidents’ meeting.

China and US teams bypass Washington and go straight to Buenos Aires for trade war talks
The Post reported last week that Liu He, China’s chief trade negotiator and the top economic aide to President Xi Jinping, was planning to fly to Washington for talks with the US delegation, possibly led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
However, a person who was updated on the latest changes said the plan had been adjusted after “work-level discussions” between Beijing and Washington. “The latest plan is that the two countries’ trade negotiation teams will meet in Buenos Aires,” the person, who declined to be identified, said.
The source said that the change was partly intended to ensure the talks would have a more direct effect on the meeting between Xi and US President Donald Trump during the G20 summit in the Argentine capital later this month.
The change, if confirmed, suggests that stakes will be raised for the leaders’ meeting with more weighty matters likely to be on the agenda.
