Crude
The downward spiral seen in the VLCC market since the beginning of 2008 continues to
the disappointment of ship owners. Given the preponderance of supply over demand, it
seems unlikely that things will change for the better even though daily returns
continue to be more than healthy for owners. A 75 ws point drop in rate levels
MEG/Feast can only be seen as significant and will obviously impact other routes as

The east of Suez market has been more or less stable so far this year and activity is
brisk. MRs trading Spore/Japan saw rate levels maintained at ws 255 basis 30,000
m/t. LR1s trading MEG/Japan experienced slightly lower rates at ws 240 basis 55,000
m/t whilst LR2s on the same route saw rates remain at the ws 197.5 level basis 75,000

It was a very slow start of the year with all the rates sliding down, especially in
the East and the Atlantic, though there are a few signs of improvement. Still, the
Atlantic market is standing at usd 105,000/106,000 based on the voyage from USG to

The week continued on the positive trend from last week with Pacific short period
fetching 75,000 on Yasa Unity and Atlantic getting low 80,000. However, market

GAS:
It has been a quiet start of the New Year in the VLGC market, only a couple of
vessels were confirmed last week. One 1986 built VLGC was spot fixed in the high usd
30’s per ton from MEG to Far East, another very modern vessel was spot chartered from
MEG to West Medit at a few dollars higher rate equivalent. The Baltic VLGC freight
