Commodity Ship Hired at Zero Cost as Freight Rates Plunge 63% This Year

D/S Norden A/S (DNORD) (DNORD), Europe’s biggest publicly trading commodity shipping company, hired a Supramax vessel at no cost other than fuel charges, its first such transaction in a quarter century.

The carrier is currently off the Spanish coast, Jens Peter Skaarup, a spokesman for the Hellerup, Denmark-based shipowner, said in an e-mail today. It will haul a cargo of gypsum, used to make plasterboard, to the U.S. East Coast.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDIY), a measure of commodity shipping costs, slumped for a 33rd session today to the lowest since August 1986, according to the Baltic Exchange in London. Operators of the global dry-bulk fleet of more than 8,900 ships are accepting unprofitable charters amid a glut of vessels, even as global trade in commodities expands to a record.

Earnings for Supramaxes trading in the Atlantic region “went from bad to worse,” the Baltic Exchange said in a report to members today. “Some owners now talk of parking their tonnage unless there’s an improvement soon.”

The Baltic Dry Index fell 63 percent this year as rents for some voyages plunge to the lowest ever amid record monthly deliveries of new ships, port disruptions caused by bad weather and a week-long holiday in China.

Hire costs for Panamaxes (BPRATCR), the largest that can transit the Panama Canal, rose 1.9 percent to $5,509 a day, the first gain since Dec. 19. Capesizes (BCAVRT), the biggest iron-ore carriers, slid 1.1 percent to $5,251, extending an 84 percent decline since mid-December. Supramaxes fell for a 47th consecutive day, their longest-ever losing streak, dropping 2 percent to $6,353, a three-year low.

SHANGHAI, the world’s largest container port, handled 100,000 fewer boxes in January than a year earlier, due to the continuing debt crisis in Europe, China’s top trading partner.
Shanghai: China’s Shanghai port opened the new year with 2.62m teu of containers handled in January, a figure lower compared to both year-on-year and month-on-month volumes.
Shanghai moved 3.3% less containers last month compared to 2.71m teu recorded in January 2012. Last month’s figure was also 1.5% lower compared to 2.66m teu posted in December 2011, according to statistics from Shanghai International Port (Group).
In 2011, Shanghai remained the world’s largest container port with container throughput of 31.74m teu, edging out its nearest rival Singapore with 29.9m teu.

MMF: Kineska stopa rasta pod udarom europske recesije

Međunarodni monetarni fond (MMF) upozorava da bi oštar pad gospodarskih aktivnosti u Europi mogao gotovo prepoloviti kinesku stopu rasta.

Iz MMF-a poručuju da bi Peking trebao biti spreman uvesti poticaje kako bi ublažio utjecaj slabljenja rasta u inozemstvu u slučaju da europski rast oslabi zbog dužničke krize.

Međunarodni zajmodavac sa sjedištem u Washingtonu predviđa za ovu godinu da će rast u Kini iznositi 8,2 posto, ali upozorava da bi mogao pasti za do četiri postotna boda ukoliko europska kriza uzrokuje veliko smanjenje proizvodnje.

Svjetska banka objavila je prošlog mjeseca da bi se Kina i ostale zemlje u razvoju trebale pripremiti za moguće izraženije slabljenje aktivnosti u svjetskom gospodarstvu koje bi ih moglo teže pogoditi nego ekonomska kriza 2008.

Nije mi baš jasno. Brodari voze besplatno tj. uz nadoknadu troška goriva.
Za DRYS još razumijem da raste zbog nafte, platformi itd., ali za ostale?
Zar ekipa neće sačekati bankrote?

Drys je skočio zbog bušenja nafte. Bojim se da ovi ostali slijepo kopiraju taj rast ne razmišljajući o toj činjenici.

Ako tako razmišljaš bolje ti je sutra kupi motor, ja ću čekati moj BMW X6.
