The anticipated support of the SA grain season has finally given the owners a bit of leverage. As we start seeing the actual fixtures come in we will have a better idea if this can be sustained. Ballasters will swarm to the work and eventually spoil the party, but today we are green.

The Fixtures: Ore =17, Coal =7, Urea =1, T/C =88, Period =28, Total =141. The ore chores ECAU and coal ECAU/US improved while period activity almost doubles w.o.w.. We should see double digit coal fixes this upcoming week as our bud TAI POWER is surely Jonezing for some product. Ore volume will not rise as much being limited in export capacity by the Force Majure obligations. We could/will see 20+ in a few more weeks as stocks are sourced outside of Australia to replenish Japan. The terrible disaster will positively affect demand.

Imports of iron ore — a key steel-making ingredient — were also affected.

"Early indications suggest the market might see iron ore demand decline by roughly 20 million tonnes during the next six months if these mills are shut down."

Japan imported 110 million tonnes of iron ore last year, or about 10 percent of global iron ore imports, a source at an iron ore supplier said.

"If additional volumes of iron ore are sold on the market this may have a negative impact on spot prices," he said.
