Sign of economic buoyancy on the high seas

Amid the deluge of gloomy economic statistics, an obscure but influential index that tracks the cost of shipping commodities by sea is telling a decidedly more upbeat story: The worst may already be over for the global economy.

The Baltic Dry Index, considered a leading economic indicator because it rises and falls with demand for raw materials, has gained for 15 consecutive days.

Although it remains well below its record highs of last year, the 108-per-cent advance in just the past three weeks – driven largely by rising iron ore shipments to China – signals that global trade may be recovering.
“Key commodities are starting to flow again, not in vast levels, but they’re starting to flow,” said Michael Gaylard, strategic director for Freight Investor Services Ltd., a shipping consultancy based in London. “Relative to the last three to four months, there’s absolutely an increase in demand.”
But with the supply of available ships down sharply, even a small increase in demand was bound to drive rates sharply higher, because it takes up to five days get a crew back on board and get a ship up and running again, Mr. Gaylard said.
“It’s been excessively difficult to get hold of a vessel and, as such, we’ve just seen the Dry Index push and push,” Mr. Gaylard said.
The price of iron ore, a key ingredient in steel, is also on the rise, climbing by a third since October, according to Bloomberg.
But shipments from Brazil, India and Australia to China’s steel industry, which stands to benefit from the country’s nearly $600-billion (U.S.) stimulus package, isn’t the only factor pushing the index higher. January and February are also seasonally strong months for shipments of thermal coal to Asia.

As well, “we’ve seen a lot of grain cargos coming out of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico … and soya cargos coming out of Brazil,” said Peter Norfolk, director at the Simpson Spence & Young ship consultancy in London.

In a dramatic turnaround, the market is now so tight that some Chinese ports are congested with ships waiting for several days to unload their cargos.

trejderi se ponadali dobroj zaradi danas ..kad ono ćorak…
još se imate vremena vratiti u dionicu bez gubitka …popodne će biti skuplje…prvo BDI a zatim i amerika…tamo rijetko nakon 5% minusa ne prelaze u plus…a i njihovi brodari bi se mogli dobro oporaviti…ovaj pad u americi je špekulativan kao i uvijek kod nekog od izglasavanja…vozarine su previše porasle da bi se padalo zbog američkih špekulanata…

Hebem ti, nit raste nit pada… Stvarno nikakve koristi od ove dionice
